When Beck’s Classic needed to boost production, improve quality and cut costs, they turned to Rosenthal.
NESTLED IN A QUIET COASTAL COMMUNITY ON LONG LSLAND lies Beck’s Classic Manufacturing, one of North America’s top suppliers of reusable hospital linen. The family-run concern rose to prominence in its 
competitive field the way many entrepreneurial ventures do, with hard work and perseverance. Now boasting three facilities, 80 employees and yearly sales topping $ 10 million, the 16 year old company is turning to innovative technology from Rosenthal Manufacturing to streamline production throughput and ultimately help fuel a new cycle of growth.
Beck’s creates over 50 varieties of reusable bed liners for hospitals and nursing homes. They also offer a line of reusable briefs and adult diapers.
The main production challenges Beck’s wanted to overcome involved issues of consistent quality and ease of handling of the large vinyl liners. In the past, the vinyl was laid out on 10’ long tables where line workers cut the material to size using end cutters.
“Our workers are good, but you can’t consistently pull and cut eight feet of vinyl for eight hours a day,” recalls plant manager Steve Beck. “We knew there was room to improve our accuracy and turnaround times.” Beck was also intrigued by the prospect of reclaiming the valuable floor space that would be vacated by the bulky tables.Sold on the need for automation, owner Warren Beck visited the fall 1997 Bobbin Show, a yearly textile industry trade show held in Atlanta. Impressed with the capabilities and reputation of Rosenthal Sheeters, Beck placed an order and took delivery of Beck’s first sheeter in February 1998. 
Standard Sheeter, Custom Fit
To ease the transition to automation, Beck’s acquired the sheeter to coincide with a lull in production. It turned out to be a needless precaution. The staff was able to merge the new sheeter into their workflow quickly and with minimal adjustment. “It didn’t need any customization, and training was a snap,” recalls plant manager Steve Beck. “We had a guy up and running in a few days.” Operators quickly acquainted themselves with time-saving features like the 8-preset memory functions for commonly used settings.
The sheeter’s positive mpact became apparent once production ramped up for the summer. “We cut a lot of vinyl in a day, and the sheeter did the work of 3 guys. Having the sheeter saved is from working overtime,” said Beck. Satisfied with the sheeter’s performance, Beck’s bought their second sheeter for another of their facilities in August 1998.
The sheeters have proven to be reliable performers, and the staff at Beck’s reports no problems at all during the two years that their Rosenthal sheeters have been in daily use. Production is consistent, predictable and above all reliable-definitely an improvement over their previous manual method.
